At the start of every new year, we all tend to do the same thing. We start thinking about what we want to change, what we want to fix, and what this year is supposed to look like. New goals, new plans, new energy. I feel that pull every time January comes around.
But when I really slowed down and thought about it, a different question kept coming up. Why does everything always feel like a restart? Why do I keep treating progress like something that has to look brand new in order to count? I didn’t fully realize this until I sat down to plan this episode, but I think a lot of us aren’t struggling with effort. We’re struggling with sticking around once things stop feeling exciting. That moment when progress gets quiet is usually when I start second guessing everything.
The real question underneath this episode was why we’re so quick to move on instead of staying consistent.
This conversation wasn’t really about setting goals. It was about what happens after the excitement wears off. That middle stretch where nothing dramatic is happening, but the work is still there. I’ve noticed that’s where I tend to lose patience. I start wondering if I should change direction, add something new, or scrap the plan entirely. What I’ve learned is that slow doesn’t mean broken. Sometimes it just means you’re finally past the part where motivation carries you and into the part where consistency has to do the work. When I look back, the progress I’m most proud of came from doing fewer things and staying with them longer.
If there’s one thing worth carrying into this week, it’s this. Before changing direction, pause and ask whether you’ve actually stayed long enough to get an honest answer. Not everything needs fixing. Some things just need time. So the question I’m sitting with is simple:
What’s one thing I can commit to without renegotiating it every few weeks?
